Among all the other team sports, cricket is one where the captain plays a crucial role in the outcome of the match. From the toss to deciding the bowling changes, to field placements and the batting order, almost in everything the captain either is in the thick of things or plays an important role in its execution.
Especially in a format like T20 where things happen rapidly and the outcome can change within a ball, the captain needs to be on his toes and react proactively. IPL is the most popular T20 cricket league in the world and the stakes involved in it are high, therefore the captain of a franchise is bestowed with the most important responsibility of clinching the coveted trophy.
Over the years, some of the IPL franchises have been quite successful and have multiple IPL trophies in their cabinet while there are some which haven’t been able to win the trophy even once. The captains of these IPL have played an important role in the success of these teams.
Let's look at the Captaincy records of each captain playing this Year in IPL 2024:
1. Ruturaj Gaikwad – CSK
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be going into this tournament as the defending champions winning their fifth title last season. There was a teaser of a comment from MS Dhoni who was thought to be the leader in the following season. In a surprise of events the franchise had announced CSK young sensation Ruturaj Gaikwad as the replacement. Gaikwad will have big shoes to fill this season where he will take over from one of the best in the world.
Gaikwad has had experience as a skipper at the domestic level for Maharashtra and even led the Indian team in Asian games. With this decision CSK clearly see a great future for Gaikwad and this will test him as a leader in front of 1000’s of people. Gaikwad has not yet led an IPL side in the past and this will be a great learning experience for him.

2. Hardik Pandya – MI
Mumbai Indians is another franchise that is among the most successful franchises of the IPL. They have also managed to get their hands on the trophy five times so far. However, they have won these trophies under the leadership of Rohit Sharma but this year MI will enter the competition under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya who has dramatically traded from Gujarat Giants.
Although, Pandya’s record with the Gujarat Titans has been exceptional the dramatic trade has created some friction among players in the MI camp which is why it is yet to be seen how they will fare this season.

3. Shreyas Iyer – KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders are known to some of the most passionate fans among other teams. They have won 2 IPL titles under the leadership of their enigmatic captain Gautam Gambhir in 2014 and 2016 but since then they haven’t tasted success yet in IPL.
Shreyas Iyer was named KKR’s captain in 2022, however, he was able to lead them last year due to back surgery but he is now back and will again take the team forward this year. Iyer earlier was the captain of DC and even took them to their maiden final back in 2020.

4. Pat Cummins – SRH
Sunrisers Hyderabad was once one of the strongest teams in the IPL but in the last few years they seem to lost the plot in the IPL which is reflected in the change of captains as well. Since the unceremonious exit of Warner, SRH has tried Kane Williamson and Aiden Markram as their captain and it hasn’t worked both times.
This year SRH has spent a huge amount of 20 crore INR to get a World Cup winning captain to their side. Cummins has just led Australia to their recent World Cup victory in India and SRH would hope that he will bring the same glory for them too.

Since then RR has been looking for their 3rd title but has been able to do so. In a quest for an IPL trophy, RR named Sanju Samson as their captain in January 2021.
Though Samson hasn’t been able to lead RR to a title RR has grown a reputation of giving a chance and giving a platform to some of the bright Indian youngsters who later went on to represent India such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel.

Gujarat Titans played their first season back in 2022 when two teams were added to the IPL setup. Hardik Pandya was appointed their captain in that season and GT managed to clinch their first-ever IPL title in their maiden IPL season. Although GT is just two seasons old they have made a strong presence in the IPL by winning their inaugural season and qualifying for the finals in the subsequent season.
But before the upcoming season, GT’s aspirations have got a major dent as their skipper Hardik Pandya has been traded to MI and their spearhead pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of IPL 2024. GT will play this season under the captaincy of Shubman Gill who will captain in the IPL for the first time.

RCB is one of the most enigmatic teams of the IPL. The fan base of RCB is considered to be one of the most loyal among all teams. But despite having some of the best players in their team and such a massive fan base, they haven’t been able to win the IPL trophy even once.
Virat Kohli is the most influential player in RCB and was their captain for a long time. After a sustained failure to win the trophy finally, the baton of RCB’s captaincy has now been passed on to Faf du Plessis in 2022.

Delhi Capitals earlier Delhi Daredevils also have had a rich history of some terrific players playing from their side but they haven’t been able to win the IPL even once. Rishabh Pant was named the captain of Delhi Capitals in 2022 after Shreyas Iyer moved to KKR.
Pant didn’t participate in IPL 2023 as he was recovering from injuries sustained during a horrific car accident but DC would be hoping that Pant’s comeback will not only bolster DC’s batting but will also take them to their first-ever IPL title.

Lucknow Super Giants was one of the two teams along with GTwho were inducted in 2022 when the IPL went from 8 to 10 teams. Although they haven’t been as successful as GT they have managed to qualify into the playoffs of both the seasons they have played so far under the leadership of KL Rahul.
KL Rahul who was released by PBKS in 2021 moved to LSG as captain and led the team well under the mentorship of KL Rahul. We all know KL Rahul for his consistent run with the bat in IPL but he has also shown that he can lead a team well in his stint with LSG.

10. Shikhar Dhawan – PBKS
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have a reputation for inconsistency in the IPL. After reaching the finals in 2014, they haven't qualified for the playoffs again. They're hoping to change their fortunes in IPL 2024 and finally win their first championship. Shikhar Dhawan, who captained the team in 2023, is expected to lead them again this season. Last year was a letdown for PBKS, finishing eighth with only six wins.
Part of the problem might be their frequent captain changes. While George Bailey led them to the finals in 2014, their success hasn't been repeated. Ten different captains have tried their hand in the past ten seasons, but none have been able to take PBKS back to the playoffs.
