Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) locked horns in the record-breaking match in the entire history of the Indian Premier League since the inception of the tournament 16 years back in 2008. Besides that, the match was also recorded as the most iconic match in the history of T20 cricket since it started in 2003. 

Both teams played this match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, April 26, 2024. The PBKS skipper Sam Curran won the toss and decided to bowl first; Batting first, the hosts KKR posted a total of 261 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. While chasing the target, Punjab Kings went on to register the highest-ever successful run-chase in the history of both the T20 cricket and the Indian Premier League.

Apart from this record, many records were registered during this match for the first time in the history of T20 cricket and IPL.

Highest Successful run-chase in T20 cricket – 262/2 (PBKS)

After comfortably chasing down the massive target of 262 runs, the Punjab Kings registered the highest-ever successful run-chase in the 21-year-long history of T20 cricket since 2003. Jonny Bairstow smashed a swashbuckling century, scoring 108 runs off just 48 balls. Besides that, Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh also played the blistering knocks of 54 and 66 runs off just 20 and 28 balls, respectively, helping PBKS to score 262 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 18.4 and win the match by 8 wickets.

Highest number of sixes in a T20 match – 42 Sixes

Earlier, during the RCB vs SRH game of the ongoing IPL 2024, there were a total of 38 sixes smashed by both teams in the entire match. It was the highest number of sixes in a T20 match. But within a few days, the 43rd game of the IPL 2024 between PBKS and KKR went on to become the T20 match for the highest number sixes. Both teams smashed 42 sixes in 38.4 overs.

While chasing the target, the opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow stitched a blistering partnership of 93 runs in just 6 overs followed by an 85-run partnership between Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw for the second wicket. Later, Shashank Singh and Bairstow stitched an 84-run partnership for the third wicket to win the match for PBKS. During these blistering partnerships, PBKS smashed a total of 24 sixes, which went on to be registered the highest number of sixes by a team in an IPL innings in the history of the tournament.

First Time in IPL: Four openers scored half-centuries – KKR and PBKS

One of the most unique records registered during this match is on the credit of all four openers of both the teams, KKR and PBKS. KKR’s openers, Phil Salt and Sunil Narine scored the blistering half-centuries followed by two amazing half-centuries scored by PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow (108 runs off 48 balls). Salt and Narine scored 75 and 71 runs off just 37 and 32 runs, respectively. Apart from PBKS’ impact batter and opener, Prabhsimran Singh also scored 54 runs off just 20 balls, with 4 fours and 5 sixes.
