Sony recently announced that moving forward, PC players will be required to have their PlayStation Network account linked to Helldivers 2. As expected, the decision did not sit very well with the PC gaming community, who were up in arms yesterday.

PSN account linking will be mandatory starting May 6. The main reason behind the decision as per Sony is to ‘protect our players and uphold the values of safety and security’ alongside providing bans to griefers and abusers who will intentionally team kill.

Being forced to create another third-party account, however, did not sit well with the existing players. Creating a third-party account and linking is not as big of a problem if it is required during the launch, but changing conditions months later is what gets more to the community. Furthermore, there are countries where PSN is not available, which gives them a lose-lose situation.

As expected, the game has been review bombed on Steam which has severely affected its rating. Within 24 hours, the game which saw a very positive rating since launch saw over 50,000 negative reviews. All the reviews are players complaining about the recent change. Not only new but even the players with hundreds of hours have changed their positive reviews to negative.

Helldivers 2 CEO responds

With everything that transpired in just 24 hours, the CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, Jhan Pilestedt also responded by apologizing to the players regarding the recent change. “Well, I guess it’s warranted. Sorry everyone for how this all transpired,” Pilestedt said regarding the reviews.

The community manager on Discord has clarified that the decision was from Sony’s end and the developers at Arrowhead had nothing to do with it. Sony has also reportedly changed their wording regarding the linking of PSN accounts on PC. It was previously mentioned as optional, while the new statement says games may require a link with the PSN.
