Even if Aston Villa win the Europa Conference League, it would not secure the fifth spot for the UEFA Champions League as it requires other results to go in their favour.

If Borussia Dortmund defeats Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, the Bundesliga will secure an additional Champions League spot. After the English teams Arsenal, Manchester City, West Ham, and Liverpool all went down out of competition in Europe in April, leaving only Aston Villa—who defeated Lille on penalties to advance to the Europa Conference League semifinals—remaining, Italy has already claimed one of the two additional berths, with Germany nearly certain to claim the other.

England is now ranked third on the coefficient standings with 17.375 points, trailing Germany (18.071 points) as well as Italy (19.428 points), with the top two teams receiving extra points for their outstanding season.

With 16.083 points, fourth-place France might still finish in the top two, although PSG and Marseille will require to win the UEFA Europa League and the Champions League, respectively. Two points are awarded for a win, one for a tie, and extra points are awarded for finishing a competition at a particular level.

England would surpass Germany even if Villa wins both of their semi-final matchups against Olympiakos and goes on to beat Fiorentina or Club Brugge during the ECL final. The other German teams, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen, would have to lose all of their remaining games.

Bayern avoided losing to Real Madrid in their first-leg Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night, meaning only a Dortmund win against PSG would secure the extra slot. On Thursday, Leverkusen takes on Roma during the Europa League semi finals. However, assuming Dortmund lose, a win for the Bundesliga leaders would not guarantee Germany a spot in the top two, as France has the potential to surpass them, however it is improbable.

Six teams from Italy might end up playing at the top table in European football the following season. That is what would happen if sixth-placed Atalanta in Serie A finished outside of the final five and won the Europa League.
