Two Premier League footballers have been detained after a rape was reported to police. The two anonymous footballers are from the same club and were detained over the weekend. Police reportedly talked with one of the players, 19, on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape at the club stadium before formally arresting him after leaving the football ground.

He was detained overnight and then questioned by police under caution. The other player, who is also 19, was detained the next day and later questioned by police on suspicion of rape. As of now, both players have been released on bail while further investigations are still pending as per reports. As they are out on bail for now, they cannot leave the nation for any football or non-football reasons.

Another rape case in Premier League

The alleged rape occurred on Friday night, and the suspect victim contacted police and filed a formal complaint hours later. According to a police spokesperson, officers detained two guys after receiving an allegation of rape. A 19-year-old player has been detained on charges of assault and assisting in rape. A second 19-year-old player has been detained on suspicion of rape.

‌According to the Sun, the players' club has not commented on the arrest "as the matter is now in the hands of the police."

The Premier League has previously been the focus of a police enquiry about an alleged rape. In October 2022, Mason Greenwood, a 22-year-old striker for Manchester United, was charged with assault, coercive behaviour, and attempted rape. Following the withdrawal of important witnesses, the case against him was later abandoned in February 2023. Greenwood denied every accusation made against him. Greenwood was sent on loan to the Spanish club Getafe following an internal club enquiry.
