FC Barcelona have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after losing to Paris Saint-Germain 1-4 at home. There have been a lot of controversies over the refereeing over the 2nd leg after Ronald Araujo was shown a direct red card after he brought down Bradley Barcola just outside the box. The video footage of the game shows that it was the softest of touches and the referee did not even bother to look into the VAR for consultation.

The home side was leading 1-0 and 4-2 on aggregate before the incident happened. The Uruguayan dismissal was the key to the change of the course of the game as PSG in the second half changed the game by scoring four goals and winning it 6-4 on aggregate to qualify for the last four of the UCL. Kylian Mbappe who was off throughout the match scored a brace out of which one was a penalty.

After the game midfielder Ilkay Gundogan criticised the central defender in the post-match as he believed it would have been better off not making the challenge on the PSG forward and not taking the red card. Gundogan believed that the 25-year-old footballer's tackle changed the course of the game in the visitors's favour.

Rift between Ronald Araujo and Ilkay Gudogan?

Araujo was asked after the comments of Gudogan towards him. He was not too impressed with what the former Manchester City midfielder had to say. He told the reporters, "Gündogan’s words? I’d rather keep for myself what I really think. I have certain codes and values that others need to respect." The defender further said he was sad because of the tackle he made as he believed that it was definitely not a red card offence.

The centre-back sought apologies towards the Barca fans as he said sorry on behalf of the team as well as himself and said that the team will again try and compete to win the UCL for the next season. The Blaugranes fans will be hoping that they win their next fixture against arch-rivals Real Madrid and they will hope to get something positive out of the game.
