Tennis star Coco Gauff may be able to write history as she has the full chance to grab the world number two WTA rankings in Madrid. Notably, star player Aryna Sabalenka is in red-hot form and is enjoying the world number 2 rankings despite not winning the Stuggart Open in 2024. However, it seems that Coco Gauff trails Aryna Sabalenka by around 590 points in the new edition of the WTA Rankings, which was released on April 22. However, Gauff had a 346-point lead over Sabalenka during the last edition.

However, according to current points, it is evident that Aryna Sabalenka needs to reach the final if she is to continue to place herself at number 2. In addition, if  Coco Gauff reaches the semi-finals or the finals, it will be tough for Aryna to hold her spot.

Meanwhile, Gauff has reached the world number 3 rankings after her great win in the US Open 2023, when she went on to beat Aryna Sabalenka by 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to claim her maiden Grand Slam singles title.

Being No. 1 is pretty cool. I have no words: Coco Gauff

“Being No. 1 is pretty cool. I have no words. I didn’t really know it was coming this week and what I had to do, but [Pegula] told me yesterday. It didn’t make me more nervous though. I think if it were the singles, I would have been more nervous," Gauff said.

“For the clay season this year, I’m really optimistic. Obviously, the goal is to win the French Open, but that’s every season for any top player. Your goal should be to try to win the big tournaments. But I’m not looking at the French Open right now. I’m focused on Stuttgart. I want to try to win Madrid or Rome or here ... I just want to get a recent clay title under my belt. So many of the ones over the next couple of weeks would be nice. So I’m really excited to have him back on the team," she added further.
