The Madrid Open is over and we have seen some iconic matches during this tournament that the Tennis world will never forget. This was a tournament that has given us some surprising matches as well. The winner of the Men's singles was Andrey Rublev who made a great comeback after losing 4 games before this tournament. The winner in the Women's singles was world number 1 Iga Swiatek who beat the defending champion and rival Aryna Sabalenka in a gruelling final game.

Though we did see some great matches at the Spanish capital, there were also a few shockers that we have witnessed. These matches were some of the most unexpected results we have ever seen. These were some of the biggest upsets in the tournament that we have ever seen. There have been some great players who had to bow out of the tournament after losing to some of the most unexpected players in the tournament.

So, here are the top 5 upsets of the Madrid Open which has shocked the fans completely:

5. Coco Gauf vs Madison Keys

gauf and keys

Coco Gauf is one of the top-ranked players in the world who has impressed everyone. She is also currently the third-ranked player in WTA and has still held that position for several months already. though Madison Keys is not necessarily one of the lowest-seeded players in the game, you would still think that Gauf would be the favourite in this encounter. However, it did not only turn out to be a struggle for the Americans but also resulted in a loss. This was a great game but in the end resulted in the loss of the 2023 US Open winner.

4. Alexander Zverev vs Francisco Cerundolo

We all know that Alexander Zverev has had a bit of an off-season so far, but we still expected the world number 5 player against the lower-seeded player Francisco Cerundolo. Zverev was completely dominated by the Argentinian who went on to defeat him in two straight sets in the most brutal fashion. Zverev was completely outplayed in this game and it is yet another disappointing loss for the Olympic Gold medalist in the current Clay season.

3. Rafael Nadal vs Jiri Lehecka

Rafael Nadal might not be a seeded player right now and is not in his prime. However, we still expected him to make it to the playoffs knowing he is one of the best players on clay. Jiri Lehcka was still a talented and upcoming player and he showed that in this encounter against El Nino. The King Of Clay was unfortunately once again rusty against the young Czech against whom he lost in two straight sets. Lehecka became another young player to end Nadal's Clay title conquest in Madrid and went on to play in the semi-finals.

2. Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thiago Montiero

Losing is never a good thing at all, especially in tennis where you have to consistently win games to stay in the tournament. However, it is even more shocking to lose to a lower-seeded player out of the qualifiers. Stefanos Tsitsipas was up against Brazilian Thiago Montiero in the second round and faced a straight loss against the lower-seeded player. The Greek God who was having a great 2024 season faced one of the biggest defeats in the tournament. This was surely one of the most surprising defeats which we ever saw coming.

1. Casper Ruud vs Felix Auger Aliassime

Casper Ruud was probably having one of the best seasons so far where he made it to several finals and even won his first ATP 500 title in Barcelona. We all thought that the Ice Man had finally broken his jinx of losing outside the ATP 250, but it turns out he had to face another surprise. Ruud was playing Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the fourth round and lost to him in two straight sets. all of us expected Ruud to win this encounter and make the playoffs once again. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the final game for the Norwegian who was eliminated from the competition against an opponent against whom he has a great record.
