Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian cricketer, has backed Shubman Gill after the latter lost his cool during a game against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. Currently, Yuvraj is in Chandigarh, where he is attending a 21-day camp, organised by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), mentoring youngsters. Singh reckons that the 20-year-old Shubman is a special talent.
Shubman was fined for showing dissent to an umpire’s decision. The behaviour didn’t go down well with the netizens, who found it shocking, either. However, Yuvraj, who last played for India in the 2017 tour of West Indies, stated that Gill didn’t abuse anyone and will make amends going into the future.
Shubman Gill is a special talent, says Yuvraj
“I was there at the ground during the match. He never abused anyone. He just questioned the decision. Sometimes batsmen do that. Look, he is young and hungry to do well. When I started playing, I too experienced such incidents. And if a player makes a mistake, he will rectify it. He is a special talent,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
In that game, Gill refused the leave the crease after being adjudged out off Subodh Bhati, the Delhi fast bowler. Shubman was then slapped with a 100 per cent of match fees and rumours also said that he was abusive to the umpire.
As far as his career goes, the Fazilka-born has an average of 73.55 in first-class cricket, scoring 2,133 runs with seven centuries against 10 half-centuries. He also boasts of a highest score of 268 in the Ranji Trophy. Even in List A cricket, he averages 45.60 from 57 matches. Moreover, he has played well for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As far as Yuvraj goes, the veteran retired from the game last year and now aspires to play in league matches worldwide. “I want to play in the international leagues; however, I don’t know when these leagues will resume, considering the pandemic,” he added.
After hanging his boots, he turned out for the Toronto Nationals in the Global T20 Canada. Later that year, the southpaw plied his trade for the Maratha Arabians in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Yuvraj also played in the Bushfire Bash charity match in Australia.
