Jofra Archer has featured in 11 Test matches for England scalping 38 wickets at an economy rate of 2.95. However, the right-arm quick is yet to play red-ball cricket on Asian pitches. Archer is likely to play his first-ever Test in India in the first Test of the four-match series, starting from February 5 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Before the marquee game, England skipper Joe Root issued a warning to the home team saying that they shouldn’t take the English speed merchant lightly as Archer looks in good rhythm and has been crackling the speedometer in the nets. Root revealed that he had the displeasure of facing Jofra in the nets and unsurprisingly it wasn’t an ideal session for one of the best Test batsmen.
“I also had the displeasure of facing Jofra in the nets and he bowled at the speed of light. He looked in great rhythm. If he can harness that into this series he’s going to have great success,” Root said as quoted by India Today.
I’ve tried to be a bit more selfish with my batting: Joe Root
The first Test between India and England in Chennai will be a special moment for skipper Root too as he will be featuring in his 100th Test game for England. Root has been in splendid form with the willow as he had hammered a whopping 426 runs in the just-concluded two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Speaking about his game, Root asserted that during the Sri Lanka tour he tried to be a bit more selfish with his batting as he decoded that the team will obviously be in a good position to clinch the game if he continues contributing with the bat.
“In the last two games, in the nicest way possible, I’ve tried to be a bit more selfish with my batting. It’s a bit more single-minded, knowing if I bat for a long period of time I make big runs and it’s obviously going to benefit the team. It sounds simple and you might ask why has it taken you 99 games to figure it out? But I’m just desperate for us to do well collectively and that’s naturally how I’ve always tried to think about the game.” Root concluded.
