David Warner did not have a good Ashes series. Even he will admit that he had poor five matches against arch-rivals England. The left-hander just managed one half-century in 10 innings and even had the ignominy to get out on three consecutive ducks. This after he came into the series on the back of a very good World Cup 2019 in England.
Warner managed just 95 runs in 5 Tests, which is a record low run aggregate for an opener playing in all five Tests of a series. He was also heavily booed by the England crowd on his return to Test cricket after his one-year ban for ball-tampering ended. In contrast, Steve Smith managed 774 runs in just 4 Tests at an average of over 100 with 3 centuries including the highest score of 211 and was named the Man of the Series from Australia. Warner meanwhile top-scored in the series with 61.
Media criticized Warner for being happy on return to home despite poor Ashes
Though Warner has the backing of his teammates and Cricket Australia to come good in upcoming series; the Australian media is going for the jugular and made a big hue and cry after the opener was clicked with a big smile on his return home and the fact that he shared a kiss with wife Candice who had come to receive him.
This moment gave Warner’s former teammate Mitchell Johnson a chance to troll him. He was amused with the welcome that the batsman received at the airport. The legendary pacer hilariously pulled Warner’s leg for such display of love in public after failing to do well in the Ashes. He wrote: “How dare you be happy Davey smoochie”, in his Instagram story.

Warner became the first-ever opener to record eight single-digit scores in one Test series and England’s Stuart Broad had his number in almost every match they played, getting him out seven times out of ten innings. Fortunately for him, Steve Smith and Australia bowlers did enough to retain the Ashes in England for the first time since 2001 and though the series was drawn 2-2, the quality of cricket was praised by one and all.
