Virat Kohli has been leading team India for a few years now. The team has done extremely well under his leadership. But every now and then his captaincy skills have come under the scanner especially in the shorter formats. Kohli hasn’t played many T20 Internationals on the bounce and in his absence, Rohit Sharma has led the side which has caught the attention of the many.
There have also been calls for Rohit to be made the captain in the T20Is while Virat continues to lead the team in the Tests and ODIs. The former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has now opened up on the matter and feels that the team management should make Rohit Sharma the T20I skipper if the workload on Virat Kohli is high with three formats consistently being played these days.
It is not easy to lead in all three formats
Selectors have been rotating and resting top players on a regular basis. It was observed Virat Kohli was rested ahead of the World Cup 2019 and Rohit Sharma was handed over the responsibility of the team for several T20 series. Yuvraj Singh feels that after the increase in the number of formats, the workload of the captain has also increased and selectors can opt for a different skipper in the shorter format.
“Earlier there were only two formats so it was easy for a captain to manage. Now there are 3 formats. If the load on Virat is more than maybe they should try somebody else for the shorter formats. Rohit has been very successful, I don’t really know.
They have to decide how much workload Virat can take. Do they need to try somebody else for T20? It completely depends on how they want to go for the future. Virat has been the best batsman. How to manage his workload? It is completely team management’s call,” Yuvraj Singh told Aaj Tak.
Yuvraj Singh praised the work done by Rohit Sharma in IPL as a skipper. The latter has led Mumbai Indians to title on four occasions. Rohit also proved his captaincy skills in international cricket by making India win Nidahas Trophy T20 tri-series in Sri Lanka and Asia Cup in 2018.
Rohit has a tremendous record as a batsman while leading Team India. He has an average of 77.27 with two tons and one double century that came against Sri Lanka. Having said that, at the moment, Virat Kohli looks set to lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup next year.
