From Kieron Pollard nearly throwing his bat on the head of Mitchell Starc to the unforgettable Venkatesh Prasad – Aamir Sohail feud in the 1996 World Cup, the game of cricket has witnessed many moments where things were not very gentlemanly. Well, that’s the nature of any sport, people lose their calm sometimes and exchange expletives, which these days has become pretty normal.
But then, things are not so fine when a verbal disagreement or a physical altercation occurs between individuals on the same side. That’s when things begin to take a wild turn and the management is in a spot of bother. Such situations don’t occur as often as we fear, but there have been some instances in the past.
Here is a list of five incidents where teammates went after each other
1. Suresh Raina – Ravindra Jadeja, 2013

In the Tri-series between India, West Indies and Sri Lanka back in the Caribbean Islands, MS Dhoni famously finished the final in style, just the way he did on many occasions in his outstanding career. But there was a game when the great man had to be sidelined during the group stages, which made Virat Kohli the captain.
The young and exuberant Indian side had lost their previous two games and there was clearly a lot of pressure. During Windies’ run chase, Suresh Raina misjudged the ball while attempting a skier off Jadeja’s bowling and the chance was lost. A furious Jadeja rambled something in the heat of the moment, which Raina didn’t appreciate much.
The players had a very clear and serious altercation. According to some rumors, Jadeja had said to Raina “This is why you’re not the captain”. The authenticity of this news is unsure, but the feud was so serious that the captain had to intervene alongside some other players to prevent it from getting big. After the end of the match, both players had a conversation and sorted the issue out.
2. Mohammad Amir – Azhar Ali, 2017

One of Pakistan cricket’s most memorable nights after the 1992 World Cup triumph, no one gave them a chance to win the Champions Trophy in 2017. Yet, against all the odds, they registered a thumping win against arch-rivals India by outplaying them in every possible department.
One of the chief protagonists of this victory was Mohammad Amir, who picked up the three biggest wickets of the opposition inside the first five overs – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. Just before Kohli was dismissed, Azhar Ali had dropped a sitter in slips off Amir, which left the fast bowler furious.
The whole team was palpably upset at that point as they knew that drop could cost them way too much. Amir was spotted using some expletives against Azhar Ali at this point and although the latter tried to reciprocate, he couldn’t do much. They were lucky enough to get another chance off the very next ball and this time, the same mistake wasn’t repeated.
3. Ambati Rayudu – Harbhajan Singh, 2016

During their stint for the Mumbai Indians, Ambati Rayudu and Harbhajan Singh have been thoroughly productive. The duo shared a decent relationship and excelled in their first season for the Chennai Super Kings in 2018 as well. But there was one incident in 2016 which raised a lot of eyebrows.
During a game against Rising Pune Supergiant, Saurabh Tiwary pulled Harbhajan towards mid-wicket and Rayudu’s fielding effort didn’t impress the Turbanator. He was quick to lash on to the Hyderabad cricket, who shouted back at him as well. Rayudu didn’t receive the tantrum quite well and it was pretty clear on the television.
While Bhajji tried to apologize and wrap his arm around him, Rayudu shrugged him off and walked back to his fielding position. A couple of years later, both cricketers accepted that it was an on-field thing which didn’t affect their personal relationship.
4. Shoaib Akhtar – Yasir Hameed, 2007

The 2007 Test series between India and Pakistan produced some outstanding cricket and that will be remembered for quite a long time to come. It was high-voltage action and both teams were throwing everything, kitchen sink included. When cricket is being played at such an environment, some verbal exchanges are inevitable.
The match here we are talking about was played between India vs Pakistan 2nd Test of 3-match series at Kolkata. The pitch was pretty frustrating for the bowlers as the batsmen were easily scoring runs even on the fourth day. An angry Akhtar, for some unknown reason, abused his teammate Yasir Hameed while returning to his bowling mark.
The words were clearly caught on the stump mic and Hameed was clearly unhappy with the fast bowler venting out the frustration that way. Younis Khan, the vice-captain of the side, had to intervene and although he was all smiles, Hameed wasn’t very happy with the way things panned out.
5. Ishant Sharma – Ravindra Jadeja, 2018

The most recent of all the incidents mentioned in the list came in Australia, where India scripted history by winning their first-ever Test series in that country. During the Perth Test, which was the only Test India lost in that series, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma were spotted having a very animated conversation.
There is no clear explanation as to what led to the rift between Ishant and Jadeja but it seems the former was not happy with the latter’s fielding position. Both players were pointing fingers at each other and the broadcasters replayed the incident quite a few times to prove it wasn’t just a normal chat.
“Who knows what they’re talking about, it does seem very animated, there’s lots of finger-pointing. Things have obviously got a little bit heated between these two,” Ponting said while commentating for Channel 7. Australia hammered the Indian side by 146 runs, only to see Kohli and his team win the next game and clinch an unforgettable triumph.
