Australia, convincingly, won their opening Test versus New Zealand at the Perth Stadium by 296 runs. The Black Caps didn’t have much to cheer in the Day-Night Test and found it tough, facing the pink ball under the floodlights. Australia, led by Tim Paine, didn’t have to sweat much in order to garner victory, but Matthew Wade had a pretty tough outing, especially with the bat in hand.
In the first innings, he managed 12 with a solitary four before Tim Southee cleaned him up. In the second innings, he was under no pressure since the hosts had already amassed a massive lead by the time he came in to bat. Neil Wagner, the Kiwis seamer, resorted to bowling some vicious bouncers at the southpaw. With the same balls, Wagner also got rid of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith.
Wade plays a strange knock
Wade didn’t go for the pulls and hooks unlike some of his teammates. Rather, he allowed the bumpers to hit him on his body. Wade played more deliveries with his body and arm, and once winced in pain after being hit on the thumb. His knock was also cut short by a short delivery from Colin de Grandhomme. Wade was caught at the deep square leg region by Jeet Raval.
The left-hander could manage only 17 runs off 52 deliveries with the help of four boundaries before succumbing to pressure. Even the commentators, Kerry O’Keefe and Michael Vaughan, found Wade’s tactic a little indifferent. O’Keefe said: “It was a bizarre innings from Matthew Wade.”
Even Vaughan didn’t mince any words in saying that being a number five batter in Tests, once can’t afford to play in that manner. “That can’t be the way Matthew Wade wants to play in Test cricket. He’s a Test match number five you’ve got to ask a question or two of the bowler,” Vaughan said.
After the comments from Vaughan and O’Keefe, now Adam Gilchrist, the legendary former Australian cricketer, trolled Wade in a hilarious way. Gilchrist posted a picture, comparing Wade’s approach with the other Aussie batters.
