The Indian Premier League (IPL), undoubtedly, is one of the most popular cricket leagues in the world. Given its widespread viewership and the presence of players from all across the globe, the domestic T20 tournament manages to gain everybody’s attention. Despite several T20 leagues emerging onto the scene after the IPL, the Indian tournament has managed to hold onto its forte and continues to top most of the charts.
Apart from the eight franchises, some unbelievable games of cricket, there are several other dynamics that go into the IPL. One of the most important factors here is the brand value of the eight sides in the tournament. From their sponsorships, player face-value and some of the other elements, the IPL franchises build upon their brand value. Fortunately, this has been on a consistent rise in the last few years. In 2018, the overall value of the IPL ecosystem was US$ 6.3 billion.
Here is the brand value of each of the eight teams in the IPL:
8. Rajasthan Royals | US$ 43 million – Rs. 297 crores

Rajasthan Royals was the team that won the first-ever edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Under Shane Warne, the team brought about some inspirational performances to clinch the title. However, post this season, they haven’t been really able to do that again.
In the following four seasons, they finished 6th, 7th, 6th, 7th respectively. But, after some structural changes, the team started doing well. In the next three seasons, they reached the playoffs twice out of three instances. Though, misery struck as they were suspended for two years following the 2013 Betting scandal.
This has impacted the brand value of the Rajasthan Royals significantly. Even though it’s been two seasons now since they’ve made a comeback, it hasn’t really recovered. At the end of the 2018 season, it stands at US$ 43 million, the least amongst all the eight teams.
7. Kings XI Punjab | US$ 52 million – Rs. 359 crores

The Kings XI Punjab franchise has always managed to have squads with immense potential and talent. However, they’ve been unfortunate to have not passed the final hurdle even once. Frequent change of the squad hasn’t really helped their cause and is one of the major reasons behind their failure.
Apart from the 2014 season where they finished as the runners-up, the team has entered into the playoffs on only one other occasion. On three instances, the side has finished as the last team on the points table. Their performance in the previous two IPL seasons hasn’t been impressive either.
However, with the likes of Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, and Ravichandran Ashwin joining the squad in 2018, their brand value has picked up significantly. From US$ 41 million in 2017, it has increased by 27 per cent to US$ 52 million in 2018. Some good performances from the team could increase these numbers further.
6. Delhi Capitals | US$ 52 million – Rs. 359 crores

The Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) is one of those three teams out of eight that is yet to get its hands on the title. Over the years, the performance of this franchise hasn’t been that great. They did well in the first two seasons where they reached the semi-finals.
In 2012 as well, they finished first in the points table and were highly impressive. However, on all these three occasions, they failed to go the distance. The Delhi-based team finished last on the points table on four occasions thus far. However, the name change seemed to have worked in their favour in 2019.
The team, after quite a while, entered into the playoffs and the youngsters fared really well. They will look to get better in the future and build up the squad from here. At the moment, the brand value of the Capitals is at US$ 52 million.
5. Sunrisers Hyderabad | US$ 70 million – Rs. 483 crores

Ever since they’ve replaced the Deccan Chargers in 2013, the Sunrisers Hyderabad has been one of the most successful franchises. In seven seasons thus far, SRH made five playoff appearances. They won the title once in 2016 under the leadership of David Warner.
Under Kane Williamson in 2018, the team finished as the runners-up. All through this while, Tom Moody was the head coach of the team and handled the matters really well. However, to the 2020 season, he will be replaced by Trevor Bayliss.
Sunrisers’ brand value isn’t as high compared to some of the other successful franchises because they don’t have an established Indian international in the batting order. While Shikhar Dhawan was there for the first five seasons, he decided to part ways ahead of the 2018 season. The brand value of SRH as of 2018 stood at US$ 70 million. It was US$ 56 million in 2017 and rose by 25 per cent.
4. Chennai Super Kings | US$ 98 million – Rs. 676 crores

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), without a second thought, is the most successful franchise in the IPL. In every season that they’ve played, the team has made it into the playoffs. Except on two occasions, CSK was in the final pretty much every time. The side has won three titles in 10 seasons thus far.
It is one of the most celebrated franchises in the IPL and has got a massive fan base. It came as a huge shock to the fraternity that they were banned after the 2015 season. The two-year absence from the league has impacted their brand value significantly.
However, the MS Dhoni factor and the fact that they have won the IPL in 2018 right after their comeback has skyrocketed their value. After the 2018 season, their brand value stood at US$ 98 million and is expected to go even higher in the future.
3. Royal Challengers Bangalore | US$ 98 million – Rs. 676 crores

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is another team in the IPL with a massive fan base. Over the years, it has been one of the most popular teams in the league and has got some of the most loyal fans ever. Even though the team hasn’t won the title thus far, fans are always behind the side and are a driving force for them.
In the twelve seasons so far, RCB has reached the final on three occasions. While they lost twice to the Hyderabad franchise, they lost the other game to the Chennai Super Kings. In the last three years, the team has had a torrid time.
They finished last on the points table in 2017 and 2019. In 2018, they ended up being sixth. Yet, courtesy the Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers factor, their brand value is quite high. After the end of the 2018 season, it was at US$ 98 million.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders | US$ 104 million – Rs. 718 crores

The Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL journey can be divided into three phases – before Gautam Gambhir, under Gautam Gambhir and after Gautam Gambhir. The team prospered the most when the left-hander was at the helm. He was quite an aggressive leader and the side won the title twice under him.
Gambhir always made the best possible use of his resources. However, later in his career, he decided to shift to his home franchise, Delhi Capitals. In the last four seasons, KKR has done quite well and made it into the playoffs thrice.
With faces like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik and many other great players, the brand value of KKR is quite high. As of 2018, it’s brand value is US$ 104 million. It was at US$ 99 million at the end of the 2017 season and it was increased by 5 per cent in one year.
1. Mumbai Indians | US$ 113 million – Rs. 780 crores

Just like KKR, Mumbai Indians’ IPL journey can also be divided into two phases. The first one was before Rohit Sharma and the second one with Rohit Sharma at the helm. Right in his first IPL season as the captain of Mumbai, Rohit won the title in 2013.
In the last seven years, possibly no other captain has been as successful as him in terms of winning titles. The side won the championship in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Mumbai Indians in the first team to win the IPL four times while no other team has won it more than three times.
Right from the coaching staff to the players, this franchise has got some of the biggest stars ever. Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard amongst many others have been the face of this team. Thus, it is quite obvious that their brand value is higher than anyone else and at US$ 113 million.
