Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan – After all the weeks of hard work, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20 is finally down to four teams. It was an action-packed final day in the Super League, where Mumbai nearly trumped Karnataka but that wasn’t to be the case. Karnataka progressed on net run-rate, ending a fabulous run for the Mumbaikars.
Prithvi Shaw gave a blazing start for Mumbai, scoring a half-century in double-quick time. But the real partnership of the day came from Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 80 runs each to take Mumbai to 243 runs in their 20 overs. They needed a huge win to surpass Karnataka in the table, but Punjab fabulously fought back, throwing water on their dreams. Shubman Gill’s efforts helped them get to 221 runs, which was enough to knock Mumbai out.
Deepak Chahar came out to bat in a critical situation for Rajasthan and smacked seven sixes en route to a 42-ball 55. Rajasthan scored 133 runs batting first in a virtual knockout encounter and a brilliant collective bowling display to restrict Delhi to 131 runs. Arjit Gupta picked up 3 wickets, whilst Rahul Chahar, Aniket Choudhary and Khaleel Ahmed picked up 2 wickets each.
Tamil Nadu top Group B with a stunning win on the final day
Jharkhand had a miserable outing in the Super League stages and it continued on the final day. They got bowled out for 85 runs with Washington Sundar and M Siddharth ripping them apart with the ball. Washington Sundar again did the job with the bat, smacking a 22-ball 38 as they chased the target in 13.5 overs. With this win, their net run-rate shot up just enough to go past Karnataka.
Maharashtra and Haryana played another cracking encounter. Haryana confirmed their semifinal status a day prior and were under no pressure on the day. Rahul Tripathi’s half-century helped them notch 167 runs batting first. In reply, Himanshu Rana and Rahul Tewatia did their best towards the end, but they fell short by 2 runs. Nevertheless, Haryana finished on top of the Group A table.
