The downfall of Melbourne Renegades continues as they recorded their 10th loss of the season in the 49th game of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21, against Chris Lynn’s Brisbane Heat. After electing to bat, it was some heavy contributions from the Heat’s top-order that took them to a moderate total of 173 for 5.
Continuing his blistering form, Lynn slammed five fours and three sixes in his 30-ball 52, adding a quick-fire 78 for the first wicket alongside Max Bryant. Heat’s skipper clarified his intentions early when he slammed Josh Lalor for back to back sixes in the 16-run third over, whereas Bryant, too, joined the party in the 5th over of Evans that fetched the Heat 15 runs.
Top-order ensures a winning total for Heat
However, it was Zak Evans’ double-wicket 9th over that led to the end of both the openers as Bryant, who scored 26 from 22 with four fours, edged a back-of-a-length delivery to wicketkeeper Sam Harper only a couple of balls after Lynn holed out to midwicket. Marnus Labuschagne, who fell only one short of his half-century, then added 22 and 19 for the third and fourth wicket with Joe Denly and Joe Burns, respectively, before falling to Evans in the penultimate over of the Heat’s innings.
While Labuschagne managed to get into the groove, hitting three fours and a couple of sixes in his 31-ball stay, neither one in Denly, who was stumped on 9 off Imad Wasim, or Burns, who was knocked over by Peter Hatzoglou for 7, could contribute much with the bat. Post their dismissals, Labuschagne got some support from Lewis Gregory, who hit a couple of fours in his 16 from 14, and added 35 for the fifth wicket as Heat finished 173 for 5.
Renegades crumble again
Though Sam Harper showed some intent with the bat, it was once again the lack of partnerships that hurt Renegades the most. Mark Steketee, who bagged three wickets in all, got his first breakthrough in the form of Aaron Finch, whom he trapped LBW for just 4 to reduce Renegades 14 for 1. Even though the other opener, Shaun Marsh, was unable to cut loose, he guarded his end as he added 42 with half-centurion Harper (57 from 32) for the second wicket.
Their alliance was broken in the 8th over, when Marsh (28 from 27) holed out a tossed up delivery from Mitchell Swepson straight to Steketee at long-off. Another short collapse began when James Frazer-McGurk, who got a run-a-ball 7, deposited Lewis Gregory straight to point and the 91 for 3 depleted to 106 for 6, as Sam Harper top-edged Labuschagne to be caught by wicketkeeper; Mackenzie Harvey (5 from 8) holed out a fuller delivery from Bartlett to mid-off, and Beau Webster was dismissed after a tight run-out call.
The tumbling paused for a brief while as Imad Wasim and Jack Prestwidge added 27 from 14 for the 7th wicket, however, Bartlett struck again in the 17th over when Imad Wasim (13 from 9) miscued a slower ball straight to the man at mid-off. 7 down for 133, it only took two more overs for Mark Steketee and Mitchell Swepson to get the remaining wickets and wrapping up the tail as Renegades were bowled out for 147, losing the game by 26 runs.
Having claimed all four points in the encounter, the Heat have promoted themselves to number four in the tally with a game left to play. Although, for them to qualify, they will have to pray for a few other results to follow.

I know he's the T20 captain but if Australia are serious they cannot play or pick Aaron Finch on his current form. Surely!

Some ridiculous consistency from Aaron Finch.

Aaron Finch's form with the bat is bad. I'm not surprised he has been released from his IPL contract.
