While the Indian Premier League has entered into the 5th week ever since its commencement, the tournament has turned out to be the biggest stress-buster for the fans in the Covid riddled year. From edge-of-the-seat thrillers to humungous out-of-the-park sixes, myriad of moments have raised the trajectory of fans’ emotions at an inexorable rate.
However, in what can be the biggest upset in the delayed edition of the 13th IPL is the low-key performance by the Men-in-yellow. The three-time IPL winners have been struggling to remain relevant in the ongoing season. Out of the 10 outings, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have managed to cross the line of triumph only three times.
With batting sensation Suresh Raina and bowling spearhead, Harbhajan Singh pulling themselves out of the cricketing carnival even before the much-awaited edition kicked off appeared to have wreaked havoc in the squad’s balance.
Adding to the yellow brigade’s woes is a below-par performance by the skipper MS Dhoni with willow. Stepping into the cricketing field after a 14-month hiatus, the captain cool has amassed meagre 164 runs.
On that note, this article attempts to focus on three backup captains who can replace Dhoni in the ongoing stint keeping an eye to shape the future of the yellow outfit. In that case, it is worth noting that Jagadesan can take over the keeping gloves from the legend.
So, without any further ado, let’s peek into the ones who can replace MS Dhoni as CSK’s skipper:
1. Shane Watson
The Australian cricketing wizard is arguably one of the best vintage all-rounders in the modern era limited-overs game. The right-hander has grabbed numerous laurels in his cricketing career for his outstanding knocks on the 22 yards.
Having played a crucial role in lifting the World Cup in 2015, the ostentatious superstar has been engaged in cash-induced cricket ever since he decided to hang his boots in his international career. He has amassed a significant 285 runs in the 10 matches thus far. The heavy arms played a match-winning knock of 117 unbeaten in the 2018 IPL finals. Ultimately, the yellow outfit went on to cling the coveted silverware.
The veteran cricketing giant has a plethora of experience under his sleeves. Eventually, Watson remains the top-most contender to take over the reins of captaincy from the most successful steward.
2. Faf Du Plessis
The former South African captain is known for his terrific willow work and lead-from-the-front attitude. Strengthening the team’s morale with his mere presence, the top-order decimator has scored 2218 runs in his IPL career for various franchises proving his mettle in the high-pressure contests.
The veteran batsman has had consistent performances for CSK wherein he went on to have a very successful debut season scoring 398 runs. As far as the ongoing season is concerned, Du Plessis has performed his role to perfection with 375 runs under his belt.
Putting forward his best foot, the South African ace places his robust candidature for the most respectable position in any cricket team all across the world.
3. Ambati Rayudu
The Hyderabad-based flamboyant batsman can edge past any storm on his day for the team. Being a formidable middle-order batsman, Rayudu has repaid the trust shown by the team management with a flair. Earlier, he plied his trade for Mumbai Indians till 2015. His incredible performance helped the team to put the scoreboard on fire.
In the 2015 season, Rayudu made 281 runs at an S/R of 145 and remained not out on five occasions. Once a regular in the Indian ODI team, Rayudu can come in handy for the CSK in the middle-order, if needed.
